Abd al-Razzaq told us, saying: Sufyan informed us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Usayd ibn Zuhayr, nephew of Rafi' ibn Khadij, from Rafi' ibn Khadij, who said: One of us, when he had no need of his land, would give it out for a third, a quarter, or a half [of its produce], stipulating three water-channels, the residue of the harvest, and whatever the stream irrigated; and living was hard in those days, iron [tools] were used to work it, and whatever Allah willed, and one gained some benefit from it. Then Rafi' ibn Khadij came to us and said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbids you a matter that was beneficial to you, but obedience to Allah and obedience to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is more beneficial to you. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbids you al-haql, and says: 'Whoever has no need of his land, let him lend it to his brother, or else leave it uncultivated.' And he forbids you al-muzabanah - and al-muzabanah is when a man has a great quantity of palm-produce, and another man comes to him and says, 'I will take it for so-and-so many measures of dates.'" Abdullah ibn al-Walid told us: Sufyan told us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Usayd ibn Zuhayr, who said: "One of us, when he had no need of his land..." and he related the hadith, and said: "he stipulates three water-channels, and al-qusarah is what falls from the ear of grain."
