حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّ الضَّحَّاكَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ كَتَبَ إِلَى قَيْسِ بْنِ الْهَيْثَمِ حِينَ مَاتَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ السَّاعَةِ فِتَنًا كَقِطَعِ اللَّيْلِ الْمُظْلِمِ فِتَنًا كَقِطَعِ الدُّخَانِ يَمُوتُ فِيهَا قَلْبُ الرَّجُلِ كَمَا يَمُوتُ بَدَنُهُ يُصْبِحُ الرَّجُلُ مُؤْمِنًا وَيُمْسِي كَافِرًا وَيُمْسِي مُؤْمِنًا وَيُصْبِحُ كَافِرًا يَبِيعُ أَقْوَامٌ خَلَاقَهُمْ وَدِينَهُمْ بِعَرَضٍ مِنْ الدُّنْيَا وَإِنَّ يَزِيدَ بْنَ مُعَاوِيَةَ قَدْ مَاتَ وَأَنْتُمْ إِخْوَانُنَا وَأَشِقَّاؤُنَا فَلَا تَسْبِقُونَا حَتَّى نَخْتَارَ لِأَنْفُسِنَا.

Affan told us: Hammad ibn Salamah told us, saying: Ali ibn Zayd informed us, from al-Hasan, that al-Dahhak ibn Qays wrote to Qays ibn al-Haytham, when Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah died: "Peace be upon you. To proceed: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'Before the Hour there will be tribulations like patches of a dark night, tribulations like patches of smoke, in which a man's heart dies just as his body dies; a man wakes up a believer and by evening is a disbeliever, and is a believer in the evening and by morning is a disbeliever; people will sell their share of faith and their religion for a paltry worldly gain.' And Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah has died, and you are our brothers and our full brothers, so do not act before us until we choose for ourselves."
