Affan told us: Hammad told us: Thabit informed us, from Anas, that Anas ibn al-Nadr was absent from the battle of Badr, and he said: "I was absent from the first battle the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, witnessed. If Allah lets me witness a battle, Allah will surely see what I do." Then when the day of Uhud came and the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, were routed, Anas came forward and saw Sa'd ibn Mu'adh retreating, so he said: "O Abu Amr, where, where? Stand up! By the One in whose hand is my soul, I can smell the fragrance of Paradise this side of Uhud." Then he charged forward until he was killed. Sa'd ibn Mu'adh said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, I could not do what he did." His sister said: "I could not recognize my brother except by his fingertips, and there were more than eighty wounds on him, from a sword-strike, an arrow-shot, and a spear-thrust." So Allah, Mighty and Sublime, revealed concerning him: "Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah" up to His saying "and they did not change in the least."
