'Abd al-Razzaq told us, from Ma'mar, who said: al-Zuhri said, and Anas ibn Malik informed me, he said, "When it was Monday, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, drew back the curtain of the chamber and saw Abu Bakr leading the people in prayer." He said: I looked at his face — it was as if it were a page of the Qur'an — and he was smiling. We were nearly tempted to break our prayer out of joy at seeing the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Abu Bakr began to step back, thinking he wished to come out to lead the prayer, but the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured to him to remain as he was. Then he let down the curtain, and he passed away that very day. He said: 'Umar stood up and said, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has not died, but his Lord has sent for him just as He sent for Moses, who remained away from his people forty nights. By Allah, I hope the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, will live until he cuts off the hands and tongues of men among the hypocrites who claim" — or he said, "who say" — "that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has died." — Abu al-Yaman told us: Shu'ayb informed us, from al-Zuhri, who said: Anas ibn Malik informed me — and he was with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, served him, and accompanied him — that Abu Bakr used to lead them in prayer during the illness of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, from which he died, until it was Monday — and he related the hadith. — Ya'qub told us: my father told us, from Salih ibn Kaysan, who said: Ibn Shihab said: Anas ibn Malik informed me that Abu Bakr used to lead them in prayer during the illness of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, from which he died. It was Monday, and they were lined up in rows for prayer. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, drew back the curtain of the chamber — and he related something similar in meaning.
