Hasan narrated to us: Hammad ibn Salama narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas: that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so has a palm tree, and I need it to enclose my garden wall; order him to give it to me so that I may enclose my wall with it." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him [the owner]: "Give it to him in exchange for a palm tree in Paradise," but he refused. Then Abu al-Dahdah came to him and said: "Sell me your palm tree for my garden." He agreed, and Abu al-Dahdah came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have bought the palm tree with my garden." He said: "Then give it to him, for I have given it to you [in Paradise]." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "How many a cluster of dates has gone for Abu al-Dahdah in Paradise!"—saying it several times. He said: Then he went to his wife and said: "O Umm al-Dahdah, come out of the garden, for I have sold it for a palm tree in Paradise." She said: "The trade has profited," or words to that effect.
