Yazid narrated to us, Muhammad b. Amr informed us, from Umar b. al-Hakam b. Thawban: that Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent out Alqamah b. Mujarriz in command of an expedition that I was part of. When we reached the head of our campaign, or we were partway along the road, he gave permission to a party of the army and placed Abdullah b. Hudhafah b. Qays al-Sahmi in command over them - he was one of the companions of Badr, and he had a playful streak, meaning he liked to joke - and I was among those who returned with him. We camped at some point along the road, and the people lit a fire to prepare some food of theirs, or to warm themselves by it. He said to them, "Do you not owe me obedience and compliance?" They said, "Yes indeed." He said, "Am I not entitled to command you in anything, if you would do it?" They said, "Yes indeed." He said, "I charge you by my right and your obedience to jump into this fire!" So some people got up and girded themselves, until when he thought they were about to jump, he said, "Hold yourselves back! I was only joking with you." They mentioned that to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, after they had returned, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever among them commands you to disobedience, do not obey him."
