Muhammad ibn Ja'far and Hajjaj narrated to us, they said: Shu'bah narrated to us, he said: I heard Abu Hamzah narrating from Hilal ibn Hisn, who said: I stayed with Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, and the gathering brought us together. He related that one day he woke up having tied a stone over his stomach from hunger, and his wife — or his mother — said to him: "Go to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and ask him, for so-and-so went to him and asked him and he gave him, and so-and-so went to him and asked him and he gave him." He said: I said, "Until I look for something." He said: I searched — Hajjaj said: but I found nothing — so I went to him while he was delivering a sermon, and I caught up with his words while he was saying: "Whoever refrains from asking, Allah will make him self-restrained; whoever seeks independence, Allah will make him independent; and whoever asks us, either we give to him or we help support him" — Abu Hamzah was uncertain — "and whoever refrains from asking us or seeks independence from us is more beloved to us than one who asks us." He said: I went back and did not ask him for anything, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, continued to provide for us until I do not know of any household among the Ansar with more wealth than us. Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, he said: Abu Hamzah informed me, he said: I heard Hilal ibn Hisn, the brother of Banu Qays ibn Tha'labah, say: I came to Madinah and stayed at the house of Abu Sa'id, and he mentioned the hadith.
