Yazid told us, Hammam ibn Yahya informed us, Qatadah told us, from Abu al-Siddiq al-Naji, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: "I will not narrate to you except what I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him — my ears heard it and my heart retained it: A servant killed ninety-nine people, then repentance occurred to him. He asked about the most learned person on earth, and he was directed to a man. He went to him and said: 'I have killed ninety-nine people; is there any repentance for me?' He said: 'After killing ninety-nine people?' So he drew his sword and killed him too, completing a hundred. Then repentance occurred to him again, and he asked about the most learned person on earth, and he was directed to a man. He went to him and said: 'I have killed a hundred people; is there any repentance for me?' He said: 'Who could stand between you and repentance? Leave this wicked town you are in for such-and-such a righteous town, and worship your Lord there.' So he set out for the righteous town, but death overtook him on the way. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. Iblis said: 'I have more right to him — he never disobeyed me for a single moment.' The angels of mercy said: 'He went out repentant.'" Hammam said: Humayd al-Tawil told me, from Bakr ibn Abdullah al-Muzani, from Abu Rafi', who said: "So Allah, Mighty and Sublime, sent an angel to them, and they brought their dispute to him" — then he returned to Qatadah's account, who said: "He said: 'Measure which of the two towns is closer to him, and attach him to its people.'" Qatadah said: Al-Hasan told us: "When he sensed death, he strained himself forward, so Allah, Mighty and Sublime, brought the righteous town closer to him and made the wicked town farther from him, so they attached him to the people of the righteous town."
