Bakr ibn Isa told us, Jami' ibn Matar al-Habati told us, Abu Ru'bah Shaddad ibn Imran al-Qaysi told us, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that Abu Bakr came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I passed by such-and-such a valley, and there was a man of humble bearing and good appearance, praying." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "Go to him and kill him." Abu Bakr went to him, but when he saw him in that state, he disliked killing him, and returned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Umar: "Go and kill him." Umar went and saw him in the same state that Abu Bakr had seen him in, and he disliked killing him. He returned and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I saw him praying humbly, and I disliked killing him." He said: "O Ali, go and kill him." Ali went but did not find him. Ali returned and said: "O Messenger of Allah, he was not seen." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, this man and his companions recite the Qur'an, but it does not pass beyond their collarbones; they will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes through its target, never to return to it, just as the arrow does not return to its notch. So kill them — they are the worst of creation."
