Harun ibn Ma'ruf told us, Ibn Wahb told us, Amr ibn al-Harith told me, from Bakr ibn Sawadah, that Abu al-Najib, the freed slave of Abdullah ibn Sa'd, told him, that Abu Sa'id al-Khudri told him, that a man came from Najran to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wearing a gold ring, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned away from him and did not ask him anything. The man returned to his wife and told her, and she said: "There is indeed something about you; go back to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." So he went back to him, having cast away his ring and a cloak he was wearing. When he sought permission, he was admitted, and he greeted the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he returned the greeting. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, you turned away from me before, when I came to you." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "You came to me with an ember of fire in your hand." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, then I have brought a great deal of embers!" — for he had brought jewelry from Bahrain. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "What you have brought avails us nothing, except as much as the stones of the Harrah avail — but it is merely the enjoyment of the life of this world." The man said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, excuse me before your Companions, so they do not think you were angry with me for some wrong I did." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood and excused him, and explained that what had happened was only because of his gold ring.
