Abdullah ibn Abbas reported: Abu Sufyan ibn Harb informed him that Heraclius, the emperor of the Romans, sent for him. Then he called for the letter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) which had been sent with Dihyah al-Kalbi to the governor of Busra, who forwarded it to Heraclius. He read it, and it said: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the servant of Allah and His Messenger, to Heraclius, the ruler of the Romans. Peace be upon whoever follows guidance. To proceed: I invite you with the call of Islam. Submit and you will be safe, and Allah will give you your reward twice. But if you turn away, then upon you is the sin of the peasants. "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you..." to "bear witness that we are Muslims" [3:64].'
