Hadrat Ubaydullah ibn Abi Rafi', who was the scribe of Hadrat Ali (may Allah ennoble his countenance), narrated: I heard Hadrat Ali (may Allah ennoble his countenance) say: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) sent me, Hadrat al-Zubayr, and al-Miqdad (may Allah be well pleased with them) and stated: "Go until you reach the garden of Khakh, for there is a woman there who has a letter — take it from her." We set off, our horses racing with us, until we reached the garden and found the woman. We said: Hand over the letter. She said: I have no letter. I said: You will certainly produce the letter, or we shall remove your garments. She then pulled it out from her braided hair. We brought it to the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), and it was from Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah to some of the polytheists, informing them about some affairs of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He stated: "What is this, O Hatib?" He submitted: O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), do not hasten to judge me. I was a man attached to the Quraysh, not one of them, and they have relatives through whom they protect their families in Makkah. Since I did not have that, I wished to do them a favour so they might protect my relatives. By Allah, O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), I harbour no disbelief or apostasy. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "He has spoken the truth to you." Hadrat Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him) submitted: Allow me to strike the neck of this hypocrite! The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "He participated at Badr, and what do you know — perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do whatever you wish, I have forgiven you."

حضرت عبیداللہ بن ابی رافع جو کہ حضرت علی المرتضیٰ کرّم اللہ تعالیٰ وجہہ الکریم کے کاتب تھے، بیان کرتے ہیں: میں نے حضرت علی کرّم اللہ تعالیٰ وجہہ الکریم کو یہ فرماتے سنا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے مجھے، حضرت زبیر اور مقداد (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہم) کو بھیجا اور ارشاد فرمایا: "جاؤ یہاں تک کہ روضۂ خاخ پہنچو، وہاں ایک عورت ہے جس کے پاس ایک خط ہے، وہ خط اس سے لے لو۔" ہم چلے، ہمارے گھوڑے ہمیں دوڑاتے لے گئے یہاں تک کہ ہم روضے پر پہنچے تو وہاں وہ عورت موجود تھی۔ ہم نے کہا: خط نکالو۔ اس نے کہا: میرے پاس کوئی خط نہیں۔ میں نے کہا: تم ضرور خط نکالو گی ورنہ ہم تمہارے کپڑے اتاریں گے۔ پس اس نے اپنی چوٹی سے خط نکالا۔ ہم اسے لے کر نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوئے تو وہ حاطب بن ابی بلتعہ کی طرف سے مشرکین کے کچھ لوگوں کو لکھا ہوا تھا جس میں انہیں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے بعض معاملات کی خبر دی گئی تھی۔ آپ نے ارشاد فرمایا: "یہ کیا ہے اے حاطب؟" انہوں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! میرے بارے میں جلدی نہ فرمائیں، میں قریش میں ایک پیوستہ (حلیف) آدمی تھا، ان میں سے نہیں تھا، اور قریش کے اپنے رشتے دار ہیں جن سے وہ مکہ میں اپنے اہل کی حفاظت کرتے ہیں، چونکہ مجھے یہ نصیب نہیں تھا اس لیے میں نے چاہا کہ ان میں ایک احسان رکھوں تاکہ وہ میرے رشتے داروں کی حفاظت کریں۔ اللہ کی قسم یا رسول اللہ! میرے دل میں نہ کفر تھا اور نہ ارتداد۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: "اس نے تم سے سچ کہا ہے۔" حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے عرض کیا: مجھے اجازت دیں کہ اس منافق کی گردن ماروں۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: "اس نے بدر میں شرکت کی ہے، اور تمہیں کیا معلوم شاید اللہ نے اہلِ بدر پر نظر فرمائی اور کہا: جو چاہو کرو، میں نے تمہیں بخش دیا۔"
